Prince Harry Faced a Strict Choice Before Stepping Down as Senior Royal

New book claims the Duke of Sussex was told it had to be “all in or all out”

Harry reportedly hoped to remain connected to the Royal family even after stepping back from official duties, but a new book suggests that option was never on the table.

According to historian Hugo Vickers in his biography Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History, Harry had proposed a “half-in, half-out” arrangement. The idea would have allowed him to pursue financial independence while still carrying out some responsibilities on behalf of the monarchy.

However, discussions with senior royal officials in early 2020 reportedly made it clear that such a compromise was not possible. Harry was told the decision had to be simple: remain fully committed as a working royal or step away entirely.

Vickers claims the outcome left Harry with little room for negotiation. The historian said Harry ultimately returned to Canada “reluctantly out,” according to reports.

Meanwhile, speculation about Harry’s future relationship with the family continues. Earlier this year, Star Magazine reported that the Duke of Sussex had promised King Charles he would bring his children to the UK for a visit.

A source told the publication that Harry hoped to introduce the children to their grandfather, adding that the plan could be the first of several trips in the future.

Still, the insider noted that any visit may depend on how the situation unfolds and how Meghan Markle is received if the trip moves forward.
