Duke of Sussex Says He Will Always Be Part of the Royal Family
Harry made headlines during his surprise visit to Kyiv after declaring that he will always remain part of the royal family, despite his ongoing rift with relatives.
The Duke of Sussex gave an interview to ITV News while in Ukraine and rejected suggestions that he is no longer a working royal.
“I will always be part of the royal family and I’m here working and doing the very thing that I was born to do, and I enjoy doing it,” Harry said.
Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020 following tensions within the family, including reported issues involving his brother Prince William, who remains next in line to the throne.
The phrase “working royal” is commonly used for senior royals who carry out official duties on behalf of the monarchy. Harry said he did not agree with being described as outside that role.
His trip to Kyiv came just days before King Charles III is due to begin a state visit to the United States hosted by President Donald Trump.
During the visit, Harry also called on the United States to take stronger action in helping end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying it was a moment for American leadership.
Trump later responded to the remarks by saying Harry was not speaking for the UK, before adding a sarcastic comment that he appreciated the advice.
