Royal author says the late monarch remained determined to serve despite health struggles
New insights into the later years of Elizabeth II reveal how firmly she remained committed to her role, even as age brought increasing physical challenges.
The late monarch, often regarded as one of Britain’s most successful rulers, earned widespread respect for her dedication and calm leadership throughout a remarkable 70-year reign.
In the book Elizabeth II: In Private. In Public. Her Story, royal author Robert Hardman reflects on how the Queen guided the country through a very different era from the one inherited by her father, George VI.
Hardman explained that when George VI came to the throne, Britain still held a vast empire and much of the focus was on maintaining its global influence. By contrast, Elizabeth’s reign unfolded during a period when that empire was gradually shrinking.
According to the author, the Queen managed this transition with remarkable grace, maintaining stability while representing Britain with warmth and diplomacy across the Commonwealth and beyond.
The biography also sheds light on her final years. Even in her late nineties, when she was experiencing what were described as mobility problems, stepping aside was never seriously considered.
Hardman noted that Elizabeth remained firmly committed to her responsibilities, continuing to serve as monarch with the same authority and sense of duty that had defined her reign for decades.
