Could Prince William Be Forced to Give Up Forest Lodge?

Prince William and Kate Middleton may not remain at Forest Lodge forever, according to royal commentators.

The Prince and Princess of Wales moved into the eight-bedroom Windsor property in 2025 after reportedly signing a 20-year lease. Their move from nearby Adelaide Cottage was widely seen as a fresh start for the couple and their three children, particularly following Kate’s cancer diagnosis in 2024.

However, William’s future role as king could eventually affect the family’s plans to make Forest Lodge their permanent home.

According to MailOnline, a former royal courtier suggested that although Buckingham Palace is no longer viewed as an essential private residence, the reigning monarch is still expected to live close to the Royal Family’s administrative headquarters in central London.

King Charles has chosen to remain at Clarence House rather than move into Buckingham Palace once its major refurbishment is completed. The palace will continue to serve as the monarchy’s official headquarters, while Clarence House remains the King’s private London residence.

William could face similar expectations when he eventually takes the throne. He may be encouraged to establish a residence closer to Buckingham Palace, with Clarence House or apartments at St James’s Palace among the possible options.

For now, Forest Lodge remains the Wales family’s Windsor home, but William’s future responsibilities as monarch could lead to another move.
