King Charles III could eventually surpass his mother’s record for the number of prime ministers serving during a monarch’s reign if Britain’s rapid pace of political change continues.
The King is reportedly set to invite Andy Burnham to form a new government on Monday. It would be the third time Charles has carried out this constitutional duty since ascending to the throne and would make Burnham the fourth prime minister of his reign.
GB News described the turnover as “a remarkable pace of leadership change” in a country where a government can normally remain in power for as long as five years.
According to the outlet, if prime ministers continue to change at the same rate, Charles could exceed Queen Elizabeth II’s record of 15 by 2037.
Burnham, widely known as the “King of the North,” was elected leader of the governing Labour Party on Friday, clearing the way for him to become Britain’s seventh prime minister in a decade.
The Greater Manchester mayor earned his nickname through his outspoken defence of the region’s interests. Addressing a special party conference following his leadership victory, Burnham said he was ready to govern and promised to offer hope to people living in “forgotten places everywhere.”
His rise comes as Labour seeks to counter the growing influence of Reform UK and rebuild public confidence in the government.
