King Charles has faced criticism from some royal commentators following reports that Prince Harry was unable to stay at Buckingham Palace during his latest visit to the UK.
According to reports, the Duke of Sussex had previously been offered accommodation at a royal residence. However, the arrangement was no longer available after officials said deadlines related to the visit had passed, a decision that has prompted renewed debate over the relationship between the King and his youngest son.
Writing for the Express, commentator James Walker argued that the situation risks damaging the King's public image.
"By refusing Harry access to Buckingham Palace for his UK visit, the King has made himself look petty and vengeful," Walker wrote. He added that while palace sources have cited missed deadlines and logistical challenges, some members of the public may view the episode as a father turning away his estranged son.
Walker also suggested that many people expect King Charles to rise above the ongoing family tensions despite years of public disagreements.
"Even with all the family drama, the memoirs and the mudslinging, the British people still expect King Charles to show clemency to his unruly son," he wrote, arguing that the monarch is expected to project the qualities of a statesman.
Prince Harry stepped back from royal duties in 2020 alongside Meghan Markle before the couple relocated to California. Since then, they have spoken publicly about their experiences within the Royal Family, including allegations of racism and other grievances, claims that have contributed to the continuing rift.
Neither Buckingham Palace nor Prince Harry has publicly commented on the latest reports surrounding the accommodation arrangements.
