Meghan Markle may still feel uneasy about royal life, even as King Charles appears willing to repair his relationship with Prince Harry behind closed doors.
Royal historian Marlene Koenig suggested that Harry is likely to spend more time in the UK, particularly because he wants his children to develop a connection with his home country and members of the Royal Family.
“It is inevitable that Harry would want to spend more time in his homeland with his children,” Koenig told the Mirror.
She added that Meghan’s view of the UK has been shaped by what she believes was unfair treatment during her time as a working royal.
“Meghan’s perceptions of the UK have been diluted by the perceived behaviour against her,” Koenig said. “But Harry wants his kids to connect with the UK and, perhaps, with family.”
According to the royal historian, trust remains one of the biggest obstacles between the Sussexes and the Royal Family. However, she pointed to the reported handling of a meeting at Highgrove as a possible sign of progress.
“The trust issue is serious,” she said. “However, the fact that Charles and the Palace apparently took control of the Highgrove meeting, and there have been no leaks, is a sign that Charles wants to heal this relationship privately.”
Koenig also claimed that Meghan was uncomfortable with some of the expectations and traditions that came with royal life.
“Meghan was not comfortable with all the rules,” she said.
She further argued that Prince William had been right to encourage Harry not to rush into marriage, noting that the Royal Family had already experienced the breakdown of several high-profile relationships.
“William was right to advise Harry to take his time and not rush into marriage,” Koenig said. “The family learned valuable lessons from the marital failures of Charles and Diana, and Andrew and Sarah.”
She added that both former couples had limited courtships before marrying, something she believes contributed to the difficulties they later faced.
While tensions between Harry, Meghan and the Royal Family remain unresolved, the reported lack of leaks surrounding recent private discussions may indicate that King Charles wants any reconciliation to take place away from public attention.
