Princess Diana Wanted the World to Understand Her ‘Suffering,’ Says Insider

Princess Diana reportedly wanted the public to understand the pain she endured during her marriage to then-Prince Charles.

The late Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, is said to have hoped that people would one day understand the emotional struggles that shaped her relationship with the future King.

In his book A Royal Duty, Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell claimed that she wanted the British public to know what she had been through.

“All she had ever wanted was for the British people to understand what she had gone through, how difficult it had been,” Burrell wrote, adding that Diana believed Charles had made her suffer but that she had also learned from that pain.

Burrell also claimed that Diana’s struggles with low self-esteem began in childhood and later affected her marriage.

“She felt her low self-esteem had taken root in childhood when she had acquired many of her ideas about herself,” he wrote. “She had taken that poor self-image into the marriage with [King] Charles.”

According to Burrell, Diana looked to Charles for reassurance and hoped his recognition of her achievements would help build her confidence. When that support did not come, she reportedly felt rejected.
