Prince Harry is reportedly not bringing Meghan Markle and their children to the UK because of ongoing concerns over security.
The Duke of Sussex has been involved in a long-running dispute over his security arrangements during visits to Britain. Now, a former royal insider has explained why King Charles is unlikely to step in.
Speaking to GB News, former royal butler Grant Harrold said the King does not have direct control over Harry’s protection.
“That’s the Home Office, that’s the Met,” Harrold said. “He’s not going to get involved in that.”
Harrold explained that while Charles could raise the matter privately, it would not be appropriate for him to interfere in decisions handled by government and police authorities.
“He’s got to leave that to the powers that be to make those decisions, and he gets advised on it,” he added.
According to Harrold, Harry’s security appears to be assessed on a case-by-case basis rather than being automatically guaranteed.
“It’s just not an automatic guarantee, and that’s what the fight’s about,” he said. However, he added that he believed Harry would likely have been given security for this particular visit.
During the discussion, GB News host Anne Diamond suggested Meghan may not be interested in returning to the UK.
“You sort of get the feeling, and I know we don’t know, but you get the feeling that she doesn’t want to come,” Diamond said. “She doesn’t see any point, really.”
Harrold also claimed that Harry and Meghan’s children have grown up largely in the United States and may not feel strongly connected to Britain.
Diamond said the situation was sad for King Charles, who has reportedly not seen his grandchildren for several years.
“The children have done nothing wrong in this,” she said, adding that they should still have the chance to spend time with their grandparents.
