Meghan Markle has been criticised over her reported response to Martha Stewart’s comments about the Duchess’s recent visit to Britain.
The controversy began after Stewart revealed that she had attended the same dinner party as Meghan in California shortly after the Duchess reportedly visited Highgrove House with Prince Harry and their children.
“I had dinner with Meghan Markle the other night,” Stewart said. “We were both guests at a dinner party in California, and she had just gotten back from the palace. I didn’t really talk to her beyond a couple of words, but I know she was talking about it.”
Tom Sykes, The Daily Beast’s European editor at large, later argued that Stewart’s remarks were vague and did not suggest Meghan had disclosed private details about her reported meeting with King Charles.
“If you look carefully at what Martha actually said, she was talking in pretty vague terms,” Sykes said. “She certainly wasn’t claiming Meghan was spilling every last detail of what happened at Highgrove.”
However, Sykes criticised the reported attempt to cast doubt on Stewart’s recollection, describing it as a serious miscalculation.
“Implying that Martha, 85, is a dotty old lady is an incredibly stupid thing to do, especially for Meghan, who enjoys very little public goodwill,” he said.
Sykes warned that the dispute could grow if Stewart chooses to share more about the dinner.
“Meghan has made a big, big mistake here, and I don’t think we’ve heard the end of it,” he concluded. “If someone can get anything further out of Martha Stewart, what should have been a half-hour story will become a seven-day saga that dominates the news cycle.”
