Why Princess Diana put duty to Queen Elizabeth above her own happiness

Princess Diana remained committed to Queen Elizabeth II and her royal responsibilities despite the unhappiness she experienced in her marriage to then Prince Charles.

Diana’s former royal protection officer, Ken Wharfe, said the late Princess of Wales sometimes found the demands of royal life difficult. However, she continued to carry out her duties out of loyalty to the Queen.

Speaking to Marie Claire on behalf of Casino.org, Wharfe recalled that Diana did not always welcome having a protection officer by her side.

“I think possibly, on some occasions, if we’d had a difficult day the night before, she might have said, ‘Oh dear, you know, I can’t cope with this. I don’t want you today.’ But thankfully, that never happened,” he said.

Wharfe believed Diana’s commitment to the monarch prevented her from walking away, even when she felt overwhelmed.

“I’ll tell you why I don’t think it ever would have happened,” he continued. “At that particular time, despite the unhappiness of her marriage, her commitment was to Her Majesty the Queen.”

There were occasions when Diana reportedly told him, “I don’t think I can do today, Ken.” Wharfe would reassure her that she did not have to continue if she felt unable to do so.

“Well, okay, you don’t have to. What do you want to do about it?” he would tell her. “We can find a reason not to do it. You can be ill, or we can come up with some excuse.”

Despite being given the option to step back, Diana would reportedly carry on with the engagement, placing her sense of duty above her personal struggles.
