Meghan Markle’s marriage to Prince Harry captivated the world in 2018. In the years since, however, the couple’s relationships with several members of the royal family have deteriorated publicly.
Now, veteran royal correspondent Simon Vigar has offered his view on why Meghan reportedly struggled to adjust to life inside the monarchy, comparing her experience with those of Princess Catherine, Queen Camilla and Princess Diana.
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Vigar suggested that Harry had one significant advantage over his wife: he already understood how the royal household and the British press operated.
“The press team at Kensington Palace is pretty small, let’s say, compared to a movie premiere in Hollywood or a movie premiere in London,” he explained.
Vigar noted that the team was responsible for handling the intense, almost daily media attention surrounding the royal family.
“It’s a tiny press team, and they’re involved in this institution, this royal family, which is on the front pages almost every single day,” he said. “They have to roll with it. They have to roll with events, and they have to try and shape them in the best way they can.”
According to Vigar, Harry understood that system because he had grown up inside it. Meghan, however, faced what he described as “a different level of expectation” from anything she had previously experienced.
He argued that Catherine, Camilla and Diana were more familiar with British society and the conventions surrounding the royal family.
“Catherine, Camilla, Lady Diana Spencer, who was an aristocrat and the most aristocratic of all four of them, they just understood the British family even more,” he said.
Vigar ultimately described Meghan’s difficulty adapting to royal life as a “culture clash.”
“It’s an American lady marrying into the most upper-class British family possible,” he concluded.
