Prince Harry reportedly wanted to leave royal life as much as Meghan did, with the Duchess described as his “escape route.”
Megxit was not solely driven by Meghan Markle’s difficulties adjusting to royal life, according to royal commentator Sarah Vine.
Speaking about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s departure from royal duties, Vine claimed that Prince Harry had also been looking for a way out of the institution.
“The truth is, Megxit was never just about Meghan and her struggles to adapt to royal life,” she said, according to Entertainment Daily.
“It was just as much about Harry’s trauma, finally coming to a head after all those years. He wanted out as much as she did, and she was his escape route.”
Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior working royals in 2020 before relocating to California. They now live there with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Vine suggested that Harry’s desire to forge a different path may have begun long before he met Meghan. She claimed he had been searching, consciously or otherwise, for a way to escape what he saw as a “generational curse” and create a life and identity of his own.
The comments come amid renewed speculation about Harry’s relationship with the Royal Family and his reported efforts to reconcile with King Charles.
Harry, Meghan and their children were recently reported to have reunited with the monarch in the UK. Separate reports have also suggested that the King invited the Sussex family to join him at Balmoral this summer, although the Palace has not publicly confirmed the claims.
