Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s renewed contact with the royal family has reportedly caused concern behind palace walls, with senior figures said to be wary of what closer relations could mean in the future.
An unnamed royal source told RadarOnline that there is “understandable caution within palace circles” because any improvement in family ties is likely to raise questions about Harry and Meghan’s long-term position.
According to the insider, the Palace is focused on “maintaining clear expectations about everyone’s role” as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex rebuild contact with members of the family.
“No one is suggesting immediate changes,” the source said. However, they claimed that renewed communication could lead to speculation over whether Harry and Meghan may eventually seek a more prominent role.
The possibility of the couple returning in some form is reportedly creating tension, particularly because Harry and Meghan are said to remain interested in a part-time arrangement.
The insider claimed they may try to reach an agreement with King Charles that would allow them to combine private life with limited royal duties. Prince William, however, is reportedly strongly opposed to such a plan.
The idea of a “half-in, half-out” role was first raised during discussions surrounding Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties. At the time, Queen Elizabeth II rejected the proposal, making it clear that the couple could not continue representing the monarchy while also pursuing independent commercial careers.
Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior working royals in 2020 and later moved to California with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
