UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham addresses Harry and Meghan’s security arrangements

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has responded to questions about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s security as the couple prepares to return to Britain.

Burnham was asked during a visit to West Yorkshire whether the government would provide and fund protection for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. He declined to discuss the arrangements publicly.

“This is a private matter. It’s a matter for Harry and for Meghan, and we wish them well in the moves that they’re making,” the prime minister said.

His use of the word “private” did not confirm who would provide or pay for the couple’s security. According to The Telegraph, Burnham meant that such arrangements should not be discussed publicly. Decisions concerning police protection would fall to the Home Office and the Royal and VIP Executive Committee rather than the prime minister. People reported the same clarification.

Security has long been a sensitive issue for Harry, who lost automatic taxpayer-funded police protection after stepping back from royal duties in 2020. Questions about the family’s protection have resurfaced following news of their planned move.

The Telegraph reported that Harry and Meghan intend to relocate to the UK and live in a private, non-royal residence outside London.

The report also said Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet have been enrolled at British schools and are expected to begin classes in September.

Exactly what level of security the Sussex family will receive, and who will cover its cost, remains unclear. Reuters also reported that those questions have yet to be publicly resolved.
