Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on a new interview in which Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, defended claims about King Charles in his book.
Spencer claims that Charles, then Prince of Wales, said, “we’ll forget her soon enough” during a phone call shortly after Diana’s death. According to Spencer, they were arguing about whether Prince William and Prince Harry should walk in their mother’s funeral procession.
The palace previously responded by saying that pain and hurt involving a sibling can affect someone’s judgment and memories, even many years after a loss.
Speaking to the BBC, Spencer insisted that his account was accurate.
“I can tell you here and now, those are exactly the words he said,” he said.
Responding to the palace’s statement, Spencer asked: “Well, is he furious? Is he furious or is he embarrassed?”
Spencer said he had spoken to Charles on the phone only twice in his life. He said he had listened closely during the conversation and was certain about what he heard.
He also argued that the palace’s statement did not directly deny his account.
Buckingham Palace declined to respond when asked about Spencer’s latest remarks.
