Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may need to maintain strong ties with the Royal Family if they want their careers to grow, according to a royal expert.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and later moved to California. However, royal expert Hugo Vickers believes their connection to the monarchy remains important to their public image and business deals.
Speaking to The Sun, Vickers said: “They need to be associated with the British royal family to secure their commercial deals; otherwise, we wouldn’t be talking about them.”
He pointed out that Harry and Meghan had previously said they wanted to live as private citizens and build an independent life away from the monarchy.
“We were told they wanted to go away, make their own way in the world, and do various things,” he said.
Vickers also addressed reports about the couple returning to public life in Britain. He argued that such a move could conflict with the agreement reached at the Sandringham summit in 2020, when Queen Elizabeth II was still alive.
“If they want to take part in public life, that is completely contradictory to what was agreed at the Sandringham meeting back in 2020,” he said. “They must accept that.”
Harry and Meghan left their roles as senior working royals in 2020 with their son, Prince Archie. They later spoke publicly about their difficult experiences within the Royal Family, including concerns about how Archie’s skin color had been discussed.
The couple currently live in California with Archie and their daughter, Princess Lilibet.
