Prince Harry’s reported plans to honor Princess Diana may create fresh tension with Prince William.
The Duke of Sussex recently returned to the UK with Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. However, reports suggest that his relationship with his older brother remains strained.
According to the Daily Express, Harry is considering a project about Diana’s life ahead of the 30th anniversary of her death. He has reportedly contacted some of his mother’s friends to ask whether they would be willing to take part in interviews.
Royal commentator Richard Kay discussed the reported project during an appearance on the Daily Mail’s Palace Confidential.
He recalled that the brothers worked together on documentaries marking the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death in 2017.
“That was the last time they were really in step together,” Kay said. He added that “William is just as much his mother’s son as Harry is.”
Kay also suggested that Harry may increasingly use his connection to the Spencer family, Diana’s relatives, to separate himself from the Royal Family.
He pointed out that Harry spent time with Diana’s family at Althorp during a visit in July.
Royal journalist and author Robert Jobson offered a different view. He believes the brothers will eventually need to appear together to honor their mother.
“How can they not be together?” Jobson said. “There’s going to be a moment where there has to be some form of arrangement for the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death. They have to be on the same stage.”
Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997. The 30th anniversary of her death will take place in 2027.
