Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have been urged to stop using their HRH titles because they do not carry out official royal duties. HRH means “His Royal Highness” or “Her Royal Highness.”
Former Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker said the sisters should follow Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s example and stop using HRH.
Speaking to GB News, Baker said people born into the royal family should have the freedom to leave royal duties and choose another career. He argued that royal life should not be a lifelong obligation.
Baker made the comments ahead of the release of his book, Royal Mint, National Debt: The Shocking Truth About the Royals’ Finances.
He said Harry and Meghan would naturally benefit from their royal connections, even though they no longer carry out official duties. He said the same was true of Beatrice and Eugenie, the daughters of Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
Baker explained that he had no objection to the sisters having their own careers or businesses. However, he believed they should stop using HRH if they chose to work outside official royal roles.
In his view, members of the family should not use their royal status to support private business interests while doing no official royal work.
Robert Hazell, a professor emeritus at University College London, also explained how HRH status can be removed. He told GB News that it is granted through formal royal documents called Letters Patent and can be withdrawn. He gave Princess Diana’s loss of HRH status in 1996 as an example.
The article does not report any decision by Beatrice or Eugenie to stop using HRH.
