Diana’s former butler shares Paris tribute amid protests

Princess Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, shared photos from a recent visit to Paris as reports of violent protests emerged across France.

Burrell visited the memorial flame near the Pont de l’Alma tunnel, where Diana died in a car crash in 1997. He left a single white rose in her memory.

Writing on Instagram, he said he felt he had to visit the memorial to pay his respects. He also reflected on how many people still remember Diana almost 30 years after her death.

Diana and her boyfriend, Dodi al Fayed, died in the crash on August 31, 1997, shortly before she was due to return to Britain.

Meanwhile, the report described clashes between police and protesters during marches over rising living costs. Cars were set on fire, shops were looted and fires broke out in several places.

The unrest followed weeks of student protests. It also added to political uncertainty ahead of elections described in the report as being six months away.

Paris Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire said entire streets had been badly damaged. Groups of masked young men reportedly burned parked cars and broke into shops.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu condemned the violence. He said late Saturday that 1,200 people had been arrested and 150 police officers had been injured.

The interior ministry said 550,000 people joined the marches across France. The CGT union gave a higher estimate of 800,000.

Police used tear gas and water cannon as some protesters threw objects and fired fireworks. The report also said a 17-year-old boy lost his right hand after a crowd-control grenade exploded in Saint-Etienne.
