Kate Middleton has made motherhood an important part of her public role, according to royal historian Kate Williams.
Williams believes the Princess of Wales chose early on to focus on her image as a caring mother. She said many royal women have wanted to take on this role, but public attitudes have sometimes made it difficult.
As an example, Williams pointed to Queen Marie Antoinette of France. She said Marie Antoinette was portrayed as wasteful and immoral rather than as a devoted mother.
Williams believes Kate has been more successful in building this image. People see her with her children and recognise her as a mother, even though royal life is very different from everyday family life.
She noted that royal mothers do not face the same pressures as many parents, such as struggling to pay bills or rushing between work and home.
Kate and Prince William have three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. She is expected to become queen consort when William becomes King.
Alongside her family responsibilities, Kate supports charities focused on early childhood development and helping people affected by addiction.
