Queen Elizabeth II was particular about her hair and liked having her favourite hairdresser care for it.
Ian Carmichael spoke to Woman and Home about his time working with the Queen, who died in 2022. He explained that styling her hair was a very personal job because few people were allowed to touch her so casually.
Carmichael said he enjoyed her company and felt honoured to work with her. He also understood the need to respect his role.
During the pandemic, the Queen’s dresser, Angela Kelly, took over caring for her hair.
Kelly said she washed, set and styled the Queen’s hair every week from March 2020. She also trimmed it when needed. Her team jokingly called it “Kelly’s Salon.”
Kelly admitted she was so nervous that her hands shook during the first two weeks. Before then, she had only done the Queen’s hair once or twice aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia.
The Queen helped put her at ease. Kelly said she kindly explained exactly how she wanted the rollers placed in her hair.
