Prince William Faces Backlash Over Energy Inefficiency of Duchy Properties

Environmental Advocates Call for Urgent Changes to Improve Sustainability on Duchy of Cornwall

Prince William, a vocal advocate for climate action, has come under fire after a recent investigation by The Mirror and Channel 4’s Dispatches exposed energy inefficiencies across his Duchy of Cornwall estate. Currently in Cape Town for the Earthshot Prize Awards, the Prince of Wales faces criticism for not addressing his estate’s carbon footprint while championing environmental causes.

The investigation found that many Duchy properties rank poorly for energy efficiency, with ratings of “F” and “G,” the lowest possible under EU standards, creating concerns for both the environment and tenant well-being. MP Barry Gardiner remarked on the “strange” oversight, noting, “Failing properties cause real health problems and place a financial strain on families trying to heat inefficient homes.”

Energy expert Andrew Parkin added that 20% of the UK’s carbon emissions stem from heating residential properties, with off-grid Duchy homes often using high-emission sources like coal and wood fires. He explained that though decarbonising these properties is complex, it remains feasible and necessary.

The Duchy of Cornwall has responded to the criticism, stating, “Environmental sustainability and supporting our tenants are central to all decisions.” Since inheriting the Duchy in 2022, William has committed to an extensive transformation plan aiming for net-zero emissions by 2032, with significant investments to improve the estate’s efficiency.

If William were to implement the proposed recommendations, experts estimate that the Duchy’s carbon emissions could be reduced by up to 69%, a vital step toward his sustainability goals.
