Actress questions next steps following emotional response to ‘Eleanor the Great’
Scarlett Johansson recently stepped behind the camera for the first time, making her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, which premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival to an emotional reception.
Despite the strong response, the Lucy star remains uncertain about continuing her journey as a filmmaker. “I don’t know. I’m not sure. I guess we’ll see,” said the 40-year-old when asked if this marked the beginning of a new career path.
Johansson shared that her focus remains on creating work she’d personally enjoy watching—whether large-scale blockbusters like Jurassic World or heartfelt dramas such as Eleanor the Great. “The commerciality of things is also important to me,” she added. “Would audiences want to see this, too? Is this generally interesting? Those are things I look for and care about.”
The film, directed by one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses, stars June Squibb and Chiwetel Ejiofor in leading roles.
