King Charles is reportedly facing a growing dilemma as internal tensions emerge between the monarch and the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Though the King is believed to support Prince William and Catherine’s discreet preparation for future roles, concerns are rising over their increasingly independent approach—especially in light of Catherine’s recent absence from a major royal event.
The royal family is expected to gather for the final day of Royal Ascot, yet Catherine’s last-minute withdrawal from the second day of the prestigious five-day affair has stirred unease within the Palace.
Catherine, who spent much of the past year undergoing cancer treatment, has received sympathy from the King, who is also undergoing regular cancer therapy. However, a source speaking to The Daily Beast suggested her cancellation may not have been entirely health-related.
“There is a perception in some quarters that Catherine simply doesn’t enjoy racing and so chose not to attend,” said one insider. “That may not be fair, but one wonders whether she would have missed Wimbledon, which she loves.”
They added that although Catherine may have had a legitimate reason, “the last-minute announcement left the King looking disrespected”. The insider remarked that such an occurrence would have been unthinkable during Queen Elizabeth’s reign.
“Clearly, Catherine wasn’t feeling up to it, but the situation was poorly handled,” the source continued. “Their team often finds out last—William and Catherine operate on their own timeline, which frustrates others working to keep things on track. This time, the plug was pulled at the eleventh hour.”
Despite the tension, a friend of King Charles emphasised his understanding nature. The monarch, they said, remains “very thoughtful and considerate” and supports the couple’s right to handle their public duties in a way that reflects their personal circumstances—calling it a “privilege” he has willingly extended.
