Monarch presents MBE to Manfred Goldberg, then meets son for first time in nearly two years
King Charles III began his afternoon at Clarence House by presenting Manfred Goldberg with an MBE, recognising the 95-year-old Holocaust survivor’s lifelong commitment to remembrance and education. Goldberg, who endured multiple death camps and a death march as a boy, has spent decades sharing his story with younger generations. His honour was announced earlier this year in the King’s Birthday Honours list.
The ceremony reflected the King’s long-standing dedication to Holocaust education. Earlier this year at Buckingham Palace, he voiced concern about the dwindling number of living survivors and highlighted efforts such as the VR-based Testimony 360 project and artistic tributes designed to preserve their memories. Goldberg has met three generations of the royal family, from Queen Elizabeth II to the Prince of Wales and Princess of Wales, and his portrait commissions are on display in the Queen’s Gallery as a lasting tribute to victims of the Holocaust.
Just hours after the ceremony, the day took a more personal turn as Charles reunited with Prince Harry for the first time in almost 20 months. Their last meeting was in February 2024, shortly after the King revealed his cancer diagnosis. Charles travelled from Aberdeen Airport to RAF Northolt before heading to Clarence House, where the Royal Standard was raised above Buckingham Palace to mark his return to the capital.
