Timothée Chalamet has opened up about an unexpected early influence on his career and it all goes back to professional wrestling.
During a conversation with Variety, the actor was asked whether wrestling played a role in shaping his acting skills. His answer was honest and surprisingly thoughtful. As a child, he said, he dreamed of becoming an athlete. But he quickly realised that dream was not realistic.
“I wanted to be an athlete,” he admitted. “I just didn’t have the skill, the body, the physique, the speed.”
That is where wrestling came in.
Chalamet explained that WWE felt like a middle ground between sport and performance. It had the physicality of athletics but also the drama of storytelling. The matches may be scripted, he noted, but the physical toll is very real. The hits hurt. The bruises last. And the commitment is intense.
For him, it was more than entertainment. It was theatre.
He spoke about the larger-than-life characters in wrestling and how they resemble classic archetypes you might find in Greek drama. As a teenager, those bold personas left a lasting impression on him. “When you’re young, things imprint on your brain more,” he said, suggesting that those early influences quietly shaped his creative instincts.
One wrestler in particular stood out to him: The Boogeyman. With his eerie, nightmare-inspired persona, the character captured Chalamet’s imagination. He also mentioned watching Kevin Nash’s entrance video backstage, joking about Nash’s appearance in Magic Mike.
Beyond the spectacle, Chalamet believes wrestling connects with audiences because it taps into something universal. At its core, he sees it as raw storytelling. It is dramatic, emotional and accessible. It does not rely on polished cinematography or subtlety. Instead, it goes straight to the heart of conflict and character.
“There’s nothing like WWE,” he said with a laugh, half-seriously suggesting they should sponsor him for the endorsement.
For Chalamet, wrestling was never just a childhood phase. It was an early lesson in performance, character work and the power of story. And while he may not have become the athlete he once imagined, that early passion clearly helped steer him toward the stage and screen instead.
