Duchess of Sussex tells Australian students she endured years of trolling but remains determined to keep going
Meghan Markle became emotional while speaking with students in Australia, sharing a personal reflection on the impact of online abuse and the challenges she has faced in the public eye.
The Duchess of Sussex addressed the issue during a discussion in Melbourne organised by the Australian youth mental health organisation Batyr, where she and Harry, the Duke of Sussex, met with young people to talk about the effects of social media.
Her remarks came as Australia recently introduced a ban on social media use for children under the age of 16. During the conversation, Meghan revealed that she had spent years dealing with constant online attacks.
She told the students that for a decade she has been targeted by harsh criticism and trolling on the internet. At one stage, she said, she was even described as the most trolled person in the world.
Despite that experience, Meghan said she continues to push forward, telling the audience that she remains resilient after years of negativity directed toward her online.
The Duchess also praised Australia for what she described as strong leadership in tackling the influence of social media on young people. She and Harry have long spoken about the need for better protections online and support for families affected by digital harm.
Through their initiative known as the Parents Network, the couple works with parents and caregivers whose children have experienced negative consequences linked to social media use.
Harry also shared a personal reflection during the discussion, recalling the period following the death of his mother when he struggled with the role expected of him in public life.
He explained that after losing his mother shortly before his thirteenth birthday, he questioned the direction his life was taking and resisted the responsibilities that came with it. Over time, however, he said his perspective shifted.
Harry added that he eventually began to think about how someone in his position could use the platform and resources available to make a positive impact. Reflecting on his mother’s influence, he said considering what she might have wanted helped change the way he approached his public role.
