King Charles and Queen Camilla have expressed their sorrow following a ferry disaster in Guyana that reportedly left nearly 100 people dead.
The MV Barima, a passenger and cargo vessel, capsized off the coast of Guyana on Saturday evening. The incident has been described as one of the worst maritime disasters in the country’s history.
In a message addressed to the President of Guyana and published on the royal family’s official website, the King said he and Queen Camilla were deeply shocked by the tragedy.
“My wife and I were most profoundly shocked and saddened to learn of the appallingly tragic loss of life following the capsizing of the M.V. Barima,” the monarch said.
King Charles also recalled his visit to Guyana and offered his condolences to those affected.
“I retain the fondest memories of my visit to your beautiful country, so it is with particular sorrow that I write to convey our deepest possible sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the people of Guyana, and most especially to the families who have lost their loved ones,” he said.
The King also praised the emergency teams involved in the rescue operation.
“We also pay special tribute to the courage and dedication of the search and rescue teams who continue their efforts under such difficult circumstances,” the statement continued.
“The people of Guyana remain very much in our hearts and our prayers at this time of deep anguish and loss.”
The MV Barima was reportedly travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, in Guyana’s Essequibo region, when it overturned on Saturday night.
The vessel was said to be carrying 179 people. According to the government, 77 passengers had been rescued as search efforts continued.
