Prince William and Kate Middleton have expressed their shock over the devastating flash flood that struck the Nepal-China border, reportedly killing hundreds of people and leaving more than 1,000 others missing.
The Prince and Princess of Wales released a joint statement on Wednesday as rescue teams continued searching for survivors across Nepal’s debris-covered valleys and hillsides.
The flooding began after a huge mass of ice, mud and rock collapsed into a catastrophic mountain river, sending a powerful surge of water through communities along the border. People remain unaccounted for in both Nepal and neighboring China.
Reacting to the tragedy, William and Kate said:
“The scale of the devastation along the Nepal-China border is shocking. We think of everyone caught up in the terrible disaster.
“Our thoughts are especially with the families facing an unbearable wait for news and with the communities confronting such immense loss.
“We are incredibly grateful to all those working in such dangerous conditions to rescue people and support those affected.”
Emergency crews are continuing to search the affected areas while providing assistance to communities that suffered extensive damage in the disaster.
