Meghan Markle could have become a modern figure comparable to Princess Diana within the Royal Family, according to royal author Simon Vigar.
In his book The Four Wives of Windsor, Vigar reportedly argues that the Duchess of Sussex had “huge Princess Diana potential” when she married Prince Harry and became a working royal in 2018.
An insider told Radar Online that there was genuine optimism about the role Meghan could play in the monarchy during her early years as a royal.
“There was a genuine belief in the early days that Meghan had the charisma, confidence and ability to connect with people in a way that echoed Diana,” the source claimed.
The insider added that Meghan’s experience, self-assurance and understanding of charitable work led many to believe she could reshape the image of a modern working royal.
According to the source, however, her relationship with the royal institution deteriorated before that potential could be fully realized.
“What could have become one of the monarchy’s greatest strengths instead became one of its biggest divisions,” the insider said.
Another source noted that comparisons between Meghan and Diana began soon after the Duchess joined the Royal Family, largely because of her public appeal and support for humanitarian causes.
“There was always an expectation that she could carve out a similar role, albeit in her own style,” the source explained.
Those comparisons were eventually overshadowed by the Sussexes’ highly publicized conflict with the Royal Family and their departure from royal duties, the insider added.
