Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s reported return to the UK could create a difficult situation for Buckingham Palace, according to royal experts.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly arrived in Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in late August. The family is said to be planning an extended stay after living outside the country for almost six years.
Harry and Meghan moved away from the UK in 2020 after stepping down as working members of the Royal Family.
Speaking to Fox News Digital, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams claimed the couple’s return could become a “nightmare” for the palace because officials cannot control their activities.
“Diary clashes will probably mean royal engagements are overshadowed by what the Sussexes choose to do,” he said.
Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield explained that Harry and Meghan now operate independently from the Royal Family.
“They are private citizens and no longer working on behalf of the King,” she said. This means Buckingham Palace does not approve Meghan’s interviews, public appearances, Instagram posts or business projects.
However, Schofield noted that the couple remains closely connected to the monarchy. Harry is still King Charles’ son, while Meghan continues to hold the Duchess of Sussex title.
“That’s the complicated part,” she said. “They can operate independently while still benefiting from an enormous amount of public interest that exists because of Harry’s DNA.”
Fitzwilliams warned that the couple’s public activities could take attention away from official royal events. Schofield added that clashes between their appearances and royal engagements could also raise questions about respect for palace schedules and traditions.
Buckingham Palace and the Sussexes have not publicly commented on these concerns.
