Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should be described as public figures rather than private citizens, according to a public relations expert.
King Charles recently referred to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as private citizens in a letter sent to Parliament and other agencies. However, PR expert Olivia Bennett believes the description does not reflect their current lives.
“Calling Harry and Meghan private citizens suggests people who have stepped away from public life altogether, whereas that clearly isn't an accurate reflection of how they currently operate,” said Bennett, a senior PR director at Go Up.
Speaking to The Mirror, she explained that the couple remain involved in charitable projects, attend public events, have business interests and regularly speak about causes they support.
However, Bennett stressed that being public figures does not mean Harry and Meghan want to return as working members of the Royal Family.
She said there is a clear middle ground between carrying out official royal duties and living a completely private life. According to the expert, this appears to be the position Harry and Meghan want to maintain.
