The source said Harry fears his father could see their return to California as a sign that they are upset or turning their backs on the royal family.
He also reportedly worries that leaving Britain so soon after arriving could make it look as though he wants to take part in royal life only when it suits him.
According to the source, Harry is still hoping for a change of plans, but Meghan is excited about spending the holidays at home.
The insider said she is already planning a holiday party and looking forward to seeing her mother.
