Queen Elizabeth II once told off a young Prince William after he returned from a pony ride alone without letting anyone know.
Anne Glenconner, who served as a lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret, shared the story in the Daily Mail. It happened during a family weekend at Balmoral in 1990, when William was about eight years old.
Glenconner said the visit had been relaxed until she heard raised voices outside the castle that afternoon.
She looked out of a window and saw the Queen scolding William, who was sitting on his pony in the driveway.
Glenconner stepped away from the window because she did not want to be seen. She later told Princess Margaret what had happened. Margaret said she would ask the Queen about it.
Glenconner explained that William had been riding with his cousins and a member of staff who cared for the horses. He returned to the castle alone without telling anyone, leaving the staff very worried as they searched for him.
