Royal commentator Sarah Vine has criticised Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s reported visit to Nottingham, saying it could draw attention away from King Charles and Prince William.
Writing in the Daily Mail, Vine argued that the couple were presenting themselves as a younger, more relaxed alternative to the working royals.
She compared their public appearance with the King’s continued royal duties during his cancer treatment. In her view, the couple’s popularity could create difficulties for Charles and William.
Vine described the situation as something the King and William had feared since the couple reportedly announced their return to Britain.
She said Harry and Meghan were now free from the formal rules of royal life. She accused them of using that freedom to challenge the King’s position.
Vine also suggested that public support can change quickly, which could help the couple attract people who prefer their less formal approach.
“They clearly intend to be the cooler, groovier royal alternative,” she wrote.
She went on to question their understanding of the monarchy’s role. She contrasted their behaviour with Queen Elizabeth II’s lifelong commitment to duty and accused them of putting their own interests first.
These comments reflect Vine’s opinion. The article does not quote Harry or Meghan attacking the King or saying they want to compete with him.
