Royal photographer recalls rude comment he made to King Charles

Arthur Edwards looks back on a difficult start and 50 years of photographing the royal family

Royal photographer Arthur Edwards has revealed a rude comment he once made to King Charles, back when Charles was still a prince.

“At least I have a job!” Edwards told him during an argument.

Edwards shared the story in an interview with The Telegraph ahead of his book, Cup of Tea, Arthur? My Extraordinary 50 Years Photographing the Royal Family.

He said his relationship with the royals had a difficult start. He recalled an incident in 1976 when he was crawling through bushes, trying to take photographs of them.

According to Hello!, Edwards became a familiar face, but his efforts to get pictures sometimes annoyed the royals. This led to several arguments with Charles.

Over time, however, their relationship improved. Edwards now speaks warmly about the King and says he enjoys working with him.

“He’s an extraordinary man,” Edwards said. He explained that Charles is one of the reasons he still works. He also believes the King is pleased to see him when he arrives.

Edwards described Charles as humble and said he finds it hard to accept praise. He once asked him why he could not take a compliment.

The photographer also praised the King’s energy and commitment to his duties. He compared him to the Duracell bunny because “he just never stops.”

Looking back on his career, Edwards said he was a boy from east London who had struggled at school. He credited Charles with helping him have a rewarding life.

“He’s got a fan for life, and that’s me,” Edwards said. “He’s a decent, decent man.”
