Royal commentator Rob Shuter suggests the couple’s international charity trips could also help them explore places to live.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s upcoming visit to Brussels has prompted speculation about whether the couple are considering where to build their future.
The trip will be their first joint overseas visit since returning to the UK. Their spokesperson told AFP that they will discuss the dangers children face on social media.
On Tuesday, the couple will attend the opening of a video installation honouring children who have died as a result of harm experienced through social media.
While the visit centres on children’s online safety, royal commentator Rob Shuter has suggested that the Sussexes could also have a personal interest in exploring the Belgian capital.
Citing insiders, he said: “Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be presenting their latest international trip as a campaign for children’s online safety, but there could be another motive: finding out where they might want to live next.”
Sources described as close to the couple told Shuter that such visits allow them to assess how different cities might fit their future plans.
“These international charity trips are about more than the causes they support. They give Harry and Meghan an opportunity to test the waters, see how they are received and identify cities where they could build a future.”
According to the report, Harry and Meghan want somewhere that welcomes them, offers career opportunities and provides the public platform they have struggled to establish in Britain.
Shuter suggested that Brussels, at the heart of Europe, could help the couple develop new relationships and raise their international profile.
“The memorial is a genuine cause, but the visit also gives them a chance to experience the city and gauge its reception,” he concluded.
